So perfect timing, I was contemplating making a blog post about this since it's Thursday sooo... fuck, I'm so hyper so this post isn't gonna be as like grammatically accurate as my ye olde ones
Okay, so. I have this peaceful, building-focused Minecraft server I used to play with friends, ever since like 2019. While we split apart, their structures stayed, and I want to keep the server living and breathing so other friends can leave their mark.
To improve upon the Animal Crossing-esque feeling I intended the server to have, I considered installing mods that added seasons, longer day/night cycles, and furniture, which was cool at first, but then I wondered: if I meet new people, how do I entice them into the server? There's so many mental hoops. So I said, let's ditch the mods (except server-side ones; fortunately the seasons one can also be used client-side), and keep the server as vanilla as possible.
One more thing bothered me: it's a 1.18.2 server! Should I burden people by asking them to play an older version of Minecraft? Then I remembered ViaVersion (or ViaFabric?) has me covered, so people can play comfortably on the latest version... on the 1.18.2 server.
But here comes THE CRAZY PART
I was trying to look for the right mod and I discovered ViaFabricPlus existed, which is client-side (so, not for my server unfortunately). But it claims to support versions from c0.0.15 (Minecraft's first multiplayer version) to 1.20.2, and Bedrock. Fascinating!
So I let my mind take a detour
and connected to my Classic server, and IT FUCKING WORKS
I was also able to get it working with a c0.0.15a recreation server, but I had trouble trying to get the c0.0.15a client to connect lol
I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this
This has been a PSA by your friendly neighborhood Ruri. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk!
